Two Louisiana Bridge Workers Injured by Pickup Truck Crash

WorkersComp3

April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and although many drivers, safety advocates, and law enforcement officers in Louisiana and across the United States may focus mostly on the safety of motorists on the road, it is also important to acknowledge the dangers and risks that workers also face when working on the road. Two such bridge workers in Louisiana were faced with this harsh reality earlier this year when they were seriously injured by a motorist as they were responding to a work request. Their story serves as a reminder to Louisiana workers and motorists that workers, too, deserve safety protections and should be able to do their jobs without the fear and threat of being hit by a distracted or otherwise negligent driver.

According to local news reports, WGNO, earlier this year on February 26, two Louisiana bridge workers were hit while responding to a work request on the Causeway bridge in Metairie, Louisiana. The car crash is said to have occurred at approximately 1:10 in the afternoon. Investigators say that the two bridge workers were called to the work site on the Causeway bridge to remove some debris that was on the roadway. As the workers were in the worksite, in their work truck, a pickup truck driven by a motorist crashed into them. As a result of the rear-end collision, one of the bridge workers broke three ribs, and the other was cut in multiple places. According to Causeway General Manager Carleton Dufrechou, distracted driving may have been a factor that caused the serious car accident.
