Mississippi’s Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten was surprised to see a number of bystanders taking tremendous efforts to assist in rescuing multiple people in a three-car accident on Friday, April 28, on Mississippi U.S. 61. “In the age of lawsuits we live in, these people didn’t let rules and regulations get in the way.” Patten said to Magnolia State Live reporters. “They provided help to those who desperately needed it. I don’t know their names, but I want to commend them for their actions. I truly believe with how bad these accidents were, these people saved lives today. They wrapped bath towels around their hands to break out windows. They were climbing on top of the cars. They broke out a windshield. They tore a door off the car. They were able to stabilize the victims. I don’t know their names, but I want to give them a huge thank you for what they did today.”

The unnamed heroes that Sheriff Patten referred to are said to have included nurses, a wrecker driver, and other bystanders who stopped by to help administer aid at the catastrophic roadside scene. At the scene, two individuals who had been involved in the car accident were trapped inside their vehicles, and the unnamed bystanders helped them by rendering aid to them when Sheriff Patten came upon the wreckage.

The three-car accident is said to have occurred around 7:50am on Mississippi’s U.S. 61 north of Natchez. According to local reports, a witness to the car accident stated that one of the vehicles involved was traveling southbound when it was clipped by a vehicle traveling northbound that veered into the southbound lane. One of the vehicles then hit another vehicle traveling on the highway, and that vehicle went into an embankment. One of the vehicles overturned. The incident is still under investigation.
