Louisiana’s Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Ranked One Of The 8 Most Dangerous Roads In America

Roadway

America’s highways are famous for the freedom they bring travelers all over the country. Stretching from state to state, America’s roads and highways span as far as the eye can see, enabling those who traverse them to road trip, commute, and transport necessary goods all over the United States. However, unfortunately, as freeing as America’s roads and highways are, they can also be a very dangerous place for drivers and passengers. In fact, according to reports, more than 46,000 people die in fatal accidents on American roads and highways every year.

One road that has garnered attention as being one of the top 8 most dangerous roads in America is also the longest continuous bridge over water. That road, or bridge rather, is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana, a set of bridges that runs 24 miles and connects Metairie (which is near the city of New Orleans) with Mandeville. According to MoneyTalkNews, an online magazine that ranked the top 8 most dangerous roads in America in December, 2022, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway gets its ranking as one of America’s most dangerous roads for several reasons. First, the causeway has open water on either side of it. Second, the causeway is said to be prone to very thick fog, so thick, in fact, that police officers have to usher drivers across it. According to the report, driving in thick and heavy fog is very dangerous because it “…can be a frightening and confusing experience. Not only can you not see where you are going, other drivers can’t see you either.” Along with Louisiana’s Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the report also includes Interstate 95, Interstate 20, Dalton Highway, The Tail of the Dragon (U.S. Route 129), Interstate 80, Interstate 75, and Interstate 5 in the top 8 most dangerous roads in America pool.
