Louisiana Worker Dies in Workplace Accident at Nitrogen Plant – Learn about Your Rights and Options if You are Injured at Work in Louisiana

KnowYourRights

The death of a Louisiana man and nitrogen plant worker shook the St. Gabriel, Louisiana community, and some Louisiana workers and their families are curious about their rights under Louisiana workers’ compensation laws in the case that they suffer a serious workplace injury or death of a loved one. According to local news reports, earlier this spring, on March 20, 46-year-old Matthew (“Matt”) Roberts, of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, was killed on the job while he was working at the Nutrien Nitrogen Plant, located in St. Gabriel. The St. Gabriel Police Department was reported to have responded to a call for help at the plant located at 5525 LA 3115, and they found Roberts unresponsive at the accident scene. According to reports, Roberts was transported to the hospital for emergency medical treatment, but he later died at the hospital. It was unclear as to how the tragic workplace death occurred, but there was “no suspicion of foul play.” The St. Gabriel Police Department indicated that Roberts was a father of two children and a war veteran. As of the time of the most recent reports on the tragic workplace death, the investigation was still ongoing.

Working with Nitrogen Poses Dangers to Louisiana Workers

In light of the terrible and fatal workplace accident that took Matthew Roberts life, it is important for Louisiana residents and their families to be aware of just how dangerous working with and around nitrogen can be. According to the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, workers can be seriously injured by nitrogen asphyxiation, and such accidents are not all-too-rare in manufacturing and industrial jobs, as well as in jobs in laboratories and medical facilities. In the ten years between 1992 and 2002, the Board notes that there were 85 incidents of nitrogen asphyxiation incidents that resulted in a total of 80 deaths. There is no doubt that Louisiana workers who work with and around nitrogen should be careful on the job, and adhere to all safety regulations and rules.

Your Rights Under Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Laws

Even the most careful of workers can be injured by nitrogen asphyxiation, and can otherwise be injured at work. Louisiana workers should know their rights when it comes to workers’ compensation benefits in Louisiana. Under Louisiana workers’ compensation laws, most workers who were injured at work and who are unable to work are entitled to Louisiana workers’ compensation benefits. In addition, certain close dependent family members of workers who were killed on the job may be entitled to Louisiana workers’ compensation death benefits. In order to determine your rights, options, and next steps in your case, it is best to speak with an experienced Louisiana workers’ compensation lawyer as soon as possible.
