Louisiana is known for many great things: the birthplace of jazz, creole and Cajun food, Mardi Gras celebrations, and of course the bayou and crawfish. With an abundant cultural landscape and rich history, Louisiana is home to a vibrant music scene and the energetic hub of New Orleans. However, as well-known as Louisiana is for the great offerings it has in terms of food, culture, and activities, it is also now known as a dangerous place for the average everyday worker. In fact, according to a 2020 report, Louisiana also holds the title of the 13th most dangerous state for workers.

The report, compiled by business research outlet AdvisorSmith, analyzed the fatal occupational injury rate in all states in the United States, as well as the District of Columbia to determine which states are the safest and most dangerous for American workers. According to the report, the top five most dangerous states for workers are Wyoming, Alaska, North Dakota, West Virginia, and South Dakota. Meanwhile, the states that are rated the safest for workers are Delaware, Rhode Island, New Jersey, California, and Washington State. Wyoming had 11.1 workplace deaths per 100,000 workers, while Delaware had only 1.5 occupational fatalities per 100,000 workers.

When it comes to Louisiana, the AdvisorSmith report, as reported on by Biz New Orleans, revealed that Louisiana had a fatality rate of 4.9 deaths per 100,000 workers and a total of 98 workplace deaths in 2018. The national average fatality rate for occupational deaths is 3.4 deaths per 100,000 workers. The report noted that industries in Louisiana that contribute to Louisiana’s workplace fatality rate include agriculture, petroleum, and natural gas.
