Mississippi Amazon Warehouse Worker’s Death Raises Questions about Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Laws, Right and Options for Workers Involved in Serious Workplace Altercations

An Amazon employee is wanted by Louisiana police, a man is dead, and a community searches for answers in the case of an altercation between coworkers that ended in a shooting death. According to local news reports, WAFB 9, on Monday, April 28, at around 11:30 p.m. a male employee at the Amazon Fulfillment Center located in Baton Rouge is suspected by police to have shot his former coworker, killing him. The terrible and fatal shooting occurred just outside the Amazon Fulfillment Center facility, according to investigators. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Daylon Anthony, who is believed to have “previously worked at the facility.” Police believe that Anthony was shot after he and the suspected shooter got into an argument or fight outside the Amazon facility. The police are now on the lookout for the suspect, and are asking the community to call in with any tips or leads. The investigation is, accordingly, ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether the suspect will be apprehended and whether charges will be filed in the case.
Workplace Fights and Altercations and Your Right to Mississippi Workers’ Compensation
The shooting of the former Amazon worker outside of the Amazon facility in Baton Rouge raises an important question in the minds of some Mississippi workers: do Mississippi workers have any rights or options to workers’ compensation benefits if they are injured in a serious workplace fight or altercation that ends in injury? The answer is “maybe.” Mississippi workers who were injured in a fight or altercation at the workplace, who did not initiate the fight, may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits if the fight or altercation was related to their work duties. However, there are exceptions to this. Under Mississippi workers’ compensation laws, Mississippi workers who were injured in a workplace fight that they started, in which they were the aggressor, or that was the result of horseplay that the worker voluntarily participated in, may not be eligible for Mississippi workers’ compensation benefits. In addition, if a worker was drunk or otherwise intoxicated at the time of the fight or altercation, they may not be eligible for Mississippi workers’ compensation benefits. Of course, every case is unique and the facts of each case vary, so it is best to speak with an experienced Mississippi workers’ compensation lawyer about your specific case as soon as possible.
