Bayou Blue Drunk Driving Accident Leaves Motorcycle Rider Dead, Criminal Charges Filed but What about the Family?

MotorcycleDown

September 15, 2023 was a somber day for the small community of Bayou Blue, Louisiana. At around 10 p.m. that Friday evening, a man was left dead and the residents left with questions about whether a crime had also been committed – vehicular homicide.

According to local news reports, John Vice of Byhalia, Mississippi was driving south on Louisiana Highway, when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic and made a left turn into the path of a motorcyclist, resulting in a fatal crash. The accident occurred on Highway 316 near Banks Boulevard. The motorcycle rider, 30-year-old Dominic Douglas of Houma, Louisiana, was severely injured in the terrible accident and was taken to the hospital, where he later, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation into the tragic crash revealed that Vice showed signs of being impaired by drugs or alcohol at the scene of the accident, but refused to provide a toxicology sample to local troopers. Vice was ultimately booked on charges of vehicular homicide, DWI (his 4th offense), and failure to yield while turning at an intersection. At the time of the news report, toxicology samples had been taken from Douglas, but it was still unclear as to whether he was also intoxicated when the accident occurred. The accident is still under investigation by local law authorities.

Help for the Families of Motorcycle Riders Killed in Drunk Driving Accidents

While Louisiana criminal courts hold drunk drivers who kill others on the road accountable for their actions under Louisiana criminal laws, they do not provide direct recourse to the families of motorcycle and automobile drunk driving accident victims. However, under Louisiana civil laws, the families of those who have been killed in drunk driving car and motorcycle accidents may be entitled to compensation for their terrible loss. Although nothing can replace the loss of a loved one, Louisiana wrongful death laws may entitle certain family members of deceased drunk driving car accident victims to compensation for the death of their family member. In order to find out if you qualify for compensation under Louisiana wrongful death laws, it is best to speak with an experienced Louisiana personal injury lawyer as soon as possible after a tragic and fatal accident occurs.
