 National Safety Council Announces “Drivers’ Beliefs Need to Turn into Actions” When it Comes to Cell Phone Use While Driving

The National Safety Council, an organization committed to making life safer for Americans throughout the country, studied the beliefs of Americans when it comes to cell phone use while driving and found that most people know or believe that cell phone use while driving is plainly a “bad idea.” According to the NSC study, a whopping 96% of drivers “think texting or emailing while driving is a serious safety threat,” and 73% of American drivers “support laws banning handheld use while driving.” However, in stark contrast to those numbers, the NSC study reveals that over half of American drivers – 60% – still talk on a hands-free cell phone device while driving, and close to half – 49% – talk on handheld cell phone devices while driving. In addition to these scary figures, 44% of American drivers read a text or email while they were driving, and 34% typed or sent a text or email while they were operating a motor vehicle on the road. It is clear from this data that while drivers overwhelmingly know that they should not text and drive, they still do it, posing a safety threat for themselves and others.
