Think Other Drivers on the Road are Concerned about Distracted Driving? Learn About What Other Drivers Said about Cell Phone Safety During April Distracted Driving Awareness Month

DistDriv3

When you are sitting at a red light on the way to work, do you ever turn your head and catch a glimpse of the person next to you talking on their cell phone, or using their cell phone to text or scroll? If the answer is “yes,” you certainly are not alone. Indeed, April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and through the efforts taken by safety awareness groups, local government officials, and others invested in keeping Louisiana roads safe, Louisiana residents and drivers are confronted with some staggering statistics. One set of data provided by the National Safety Council shows an interesting disconnect between the beliefs held by drivers about cell phone use while driving, and the actual practice of most people driving on the road. But what exactly is this disconnect between belief and action, and how can Louisiana drivers get justice if they are injured by a negligent driver who was distracted by their cell phone? We answer those questions here.

National Safety Council Announces “Drivers’ Beliefs Need to Turn into Actions” When it Comes to Cell Phone Use While Driving

The National Safety Council, an organization committed to making life safer for Americans throughout the country, studied the beliefs of Americans when it comes to cell phone use while driving and found that most people know or believe that cell phone use while driving is plainly a “bad idea.” According to the NSC study, a whopping 96% of drivers “think texting or emailing while driving is a serious safety threat,” and 73% of American drivers “support laws banning handheld use while driving.” However, in stark contrast to those numbers, the NSC study reveals that over half of American drivers – 60% – still talk on a hands-free cell phone device while driving, and close to half – 49% – talk on handheld cell phone devices while driving. In addition to these scary figures, 44% of American drivers read a text or email while they were driving, and 34% typed or sent a text or email while they were operating a motor vehicle on the road. It is clear from this data that while drivers overwhelmingly know that they should not text and drive, they still do it, posing a safety threat for themselves and others.
