Louisiana Officials Ramp-Up Efforts to Attack Distracted Driving During April Distracted Driving Awareness Month

DistractedDrivingAwarenessMonth

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and Louisiana officials are spreading the word and encouraging their constituents to make better choices while they drive on Louisiana roads. According to local news reports, the efforts this year follow data that is both frightening and enlightening when it comes to the dangers of distracted driving to Louisiana drivers and residents. The data, from the Department of Transportation, reveals that in the year 2024 alone, there were a total of 180 fatalities in Louisiana caused by negligent and distracted drivers. In addition to that figure, there were another 1,295 serious injuries in Louisiana that were caused by distracted drivers in that same year. Of these startling statistics, Department of Transportation Secretary Joe Donahue said, “That’s 180 empty seats at dinner tables, 1,295 families whose lives were turned upside down, and countless friends and loved ones left grieving or caring for someone who may never fully recover.”

Cellular Phones Remain Major Risk Factor in Serious Distracted Driving Car Accidents in Louisiana

There is no doubt that any conversation about distracted driving must include the topic of distracted driving due to the use of a cell phone while operating a car. Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple underscored just how cell phone use while driving can be normalized by parents, and how this dangerous practice can be easily mimicked, stating, “If they see you using a phone while driving or texting while driving, it’s just a natural progression. They’re going to think that’s ok. So, model good behavior for your kids.” Meanwhile, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission hopes to make Louisiana safer and freer of distracted drivers by taking on the state legislature. Louisiana Highway Commission executive director Lisa Freeman stated that her office would “once again push lawmakers to approve a hands-free primary law, which would allow police officers to ticket drivers who use a handheld cell phone while driving.” She added that “The states who have gone in that direction over the last several decades have really seen, like, tremendous results.”

Your Rights in Louisiana if You are Injured in a Distracted Driving Car Accident Due to Another Driver’s Fault

In light of April Distracted Driving Awareness Month, it is important for Louisiana residents and drivers to know about their rights if they are injured by a negligent and distracted driver. Under Louisiana personal injury laws, victims of distracted driving accidents can file a claim in court to recover compensation under Louisiana personal injury laws. There is a limited time to file a claim under Louisiana personal injury laws, so it is always best to speak with an experienced Louisiana personal injury lawyer about your case as soon as possible after a serious distracted driving car accident occurs.
